Apps of the Week

Apps of the Week
Each Friday in The Scene in the Irish Daily Star, I round up some of the best new smartphone and tablet PC apps doing the rounds. Here are this week's apps...

Journey Plan, iOS/Android, Free
This great app provides data from all licensed and contracted public transport providers across the island of Ireland. It uses GPS technology and provides door-to-door journey plans and has information about scheduled public transport departures and trips near your current location or from any specified place in the 32 counties.

Nike+ Running, iOS, Free
The most popular running app on iTunes has a fresh new look and you no longer need a sensor or additional products. Map your runs, track your progress and get the motivation you need. Whether on a country trail or your gym’s treadmill, the GPS and accelerometer accurately records your distance, pace, and time. And the in-run audio feedback lets you know these metrics at every mile.

Sky Sports, iPad, Free/€5.49 per month
This app has been updated with a new F1 companion option to allow split-screen viewing so you can simultaneously follow action from two different cameras angles. The app now also includes the Remote Record and functionality to set show reminders, along with new team pages added for the summer cricket season. The app is free to Sky TV subscribers.

Phoster, iOS 5, €1.59
This new user-friendly HD app allows users to create stylish posters and various invitation cards with pleasingly little effort. Stylish templates and a multitude of effects and designs allow you to complete the chic posters in your own way. You can also add your own text and photos and print using an AirPrint-enabled printer.
