Apps of the Week

Apps of the Week
Each Friday in The Scene in the Irish Daily Star, I round up some of the best new smartphone and tablet PC apps doing the rounds. Here are this week's apps...
DriveGain, iOS, Free
Trying to find the perfect picnic location? Use this smart app to help save fuel as you drive. Using the GPS on your iOS device, it calculates how efficiently the vehicle is being driven, giving a score out of 100. Combining information about the rates of acceleration, driving smoothness and speed, you’ll get visual and audio feedback to improve your fuel economy.

Art of Coffee, iOS, €2.49
There are more coffee-based apps than you may imagine and this one, despite its price, caught our eye. Coffee art is apparently a real skill — and this app will teach you all about it, from basic designs to some more advanced and tricky creations. So follow the step-by-step guide to create a real stir on the top of your froth, and be admired for it.

Boom Bah, iPad, €3.99
This iPad book is based on the printed version of Boom Bah, aimed at two-year-olds to five-year-olds. It tells the story of an animal band, with children able to tap on the screen to “play the tings, bangs, clangs, bangs, bongs” and other sounds. The momentum never lags as busy fingers animate the high-spirited animals as they join in the celebration.

Songify, Android, Free
Music apps developer Smule has finally released Songify for Android devices. The hugely popular app — which has notched up nine million downloads on iOS — gets you to speak into the microphone, then turns your words into an Auto-Tune-style song. More than 120 million songs have been created so far — it’s quite addictive and great fun.
