GTAV dislikes records. And so, befitting its characters and sordid history, it opts to break them.
Despite the unmitigated disaster of the GTA online launch last Tuesday (multiple, desperate patches later and it remains virtually unplayable), Rockstar’s fifth proper Grand Theft Auto remains the largest entertainment launch of all time!
Generating more than $800m within 24 hours of release, and passing that $1bn mark within three days, the GTAV storm shows no signs of slowing. Especially given Sony has now revealed GTAV to be the largest digital release Playstation has ever enjoyed. This breaks the record set only this June by The Last of Us, as revealed by Sony’s Fred Dutton via the EU Playstation Blog.
In other, record-obliterating news, Grand Theft Auto V recently became the UK’s fastest selling game of all time, shifting 2.25m units over a five day period. The record was previously held by Black Ops, which sold 2m in the same time frame.
In conclusion, not unlike Ron Burgundy before it, GTAV – It’s kind of a big deal!
