Journey wins big at BAFTAs

Journey wins big at BAFTAs
Beating Black Ops II at its own game.
Journey was the big winner of last night’s Videogame BAFTAs after picking up five awards. The game, developed by thatgamecompany, netted awards for Online Multiplayer, Artistic Achievement, Game Design, Original Music and Audio Achievement. Notably, it beat the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Borderlands 2 and Halo 4 to take the Online Multiplayer award, while it pipped Dishonored, Far Cry 3 and The Walking Dead among others to the Game Design award.

Dishonored scooped the grand prize on the night by taking the Best Game in 2013 award. The first-person stealth/action title beat Journey, Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead, FIFA 13, and Far Cry 3.

Elsewhere, both The Walking Dead and The Unfinished Swan picked up two awards each. The former won for Story and Mobile & Handheld, while the latter was rewarded for Innovation and Best Debut Game. The Room, created by Guildford-based Fireproof Studios, took the British Game Award.

In addition, Gabe Newell, the CEO of Valve, was honoured with an Academy Fellowship, Bafta's highest accolade. Everyone interested in gaming is aware of his contributions to date thanks to his creation of games such as Half-Life and Portal along with the Steam platform and the upcoming Steambox. He made a short, but sweet acceptance speech in which he thanked the employees of Valve and the gamers who have been part of the journey. Many had hoped that he would drop a reference to Half-Life 3; perhaps that’s why he kept his speech short.
