If you had even a passing flirtation with adventure games in the last 20 years, you’ve likely heard the name Jane Jensen
From her early days as a writer for Sierra
titles like Police Quest
and Kings Quest
(there were a lot of quests in those days) Jensen
really made her name as the designer, writer and director of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
in 1993.A deliciously dark tale of murder, voodoo and TimCurry, Sins of the Fathers spawned two GabrielKnight starring sequels in 1995 and 1999 which Jensen also participated in. In more recent years, she turned her attention to the casual market and had a hand in the ill received Gray Matter in 2010.
Adventure fans, rejoice – Jensen
is back with an all new tale – Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller
. While she’s only officially on board as a story consultant, the game itself reeks of GabrielKnight
– mixing supernatural elements with murder scenes a tightly designed puzzles.
The story itself revolved around the titular heroine who has a mysterious power that can let her see the recent past when she touches certain objects and people. This comes in handy in her job as an FBI agent investigating serious crimes but isn’t enough to save her brother when the pair are targeted by the dreaded Cain killer – who murders siblings in tandem. Three years later, she’s still on the Cain case and finds new leads in unexpected places. We’re currently working through the first episode of Cognition and will have a review up soon.
