Sony storms E3 2012
What has Sony got in store for us?
Sony kicked off its E3 presentation with Quantic Dream’s new IP which goes by the name Beyond: Two Souls. The team was previously behind Heavy Rain, so that in itself should make some gamers pay attention. Ellen Page stars as the character Jody Holmes with the game following her through 15 years of her life. David Cage stated that this is the first time in a video game where we’ll live the life of a character. Quantic Dream looks set to blur the line between film and video game once more. Unfortunately, we don’t have a confirmed release date just yet.

PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, the new Sony themed brawler, will allow gamers to put arguments regarding the best video game characters to rest. It looks very like Smash Bros. from a visual perspective with a Sony spin on things. Characters such as Kratos, Sly Cooper and Fat Princess will be included. Sony also announced that Nathan Drake and the Big Daddy from BioShock will be playable. PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale will be available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and cross-platform play will be possible.

Sony announced that PlayStation One classics such as Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy VII will be released on the PlayStation Vita. The handheld device is also being touted as a hub for indie games. It’s too early to tell, but we can only hope that indie developers will be supported. Like Microsoft, Sony is targeting the home entertainment market. The company has deals in place to bring YouTube, Hulu Plus and Crackle to the Vita soon, although availability was not mentioned.

However, Sony is keeping games at the forefront of the PlayStation Vita. Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified will be released “this holiday season” and more announcements will be made down the line. An Assassin’s Creed title, by the name Assassin's Creed III: Liberation will also be coming to the handheld device and has been designed to take advantage of the power of Vita. Interestingly, it’s the first time you’ll be able to play as a female assassin. This title will also take advantage of cross-platform connectivity as players can unlock Connor's tomahawk, upgraded ammunition pouches and other items if you have Assassin’s Creed III for PlayStation 3 and Liberation.

Sony has managed to snag some exclusive downloadable content for its systems. PlayStation 3 owners will get exclusive access to content for Assassin’s Creed III. Continuing the partnership with Ubisoft, PlayStation 3 owners will also get exclusive, and free, downloadable content for Far Cry 3.

Since the PlayStation Move launched two years ago 250 games have been made available which support the control scheme. Sony was keen to present its upcoming range of titles with Move support. However, Sony was also sure to remind gamers about the PlayStation Eye. Wonderbook is one such development, which will use the technology. Sony is working with best-selling authors to create stories and games using augmented reality technology. Moonbot Studios will create Diggs Nightcrawler for Wonderbook, while JK Rowling has been contracted to release Book of Spells as the first title on the platform. Sony promises that more will be announced before Wonderbook launches at the end of the year.

If you haven’t had enough of the PlayStation experience via your PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, you’ll soon be able to enjoy it on Android phones and tablets. The PlayStation Suite was launched as a beta in April to the development community. There will soon be PlayStation certified devices to enable users to play games, and HTC will be the first non-Sony partner "with which we'll share our expertise". PlayStation Suite has now been rebranded to PlayStation Mobile to mirror the “mobility of the PlayStation experience across a range of devices.”

If those announcements didn’t thrill you, then the trailer for God of War: Ascension should at least have you sitting up a little straighter. Kratos is back once again and ready to dispatch hordes of enemies in the most visceral of fashions. The only footage is the gameplay footage from the presentation; you can see it from 1:14 in the video at the bottom of the page. And just like that, the release date was announced as March 12th 2013.

The style of Naughty Dog is written all over its new IP, The Last of Us. The gameplay footage shows Joel and Ellie attempting to get out of a ruined city. Unfortunately for them they must first get to the bridge through an area controlled by hunters. One thing is for certain: The Last of Us won’t pull any punches.

If you’d like to take in the full conference and the range of gameplay videos and on-stage demos, it is now available. Make sure you are comfortable.
