Apps of the Week

Apps of the Week
Each Friday in The Scene in the Irish Daily Star, I round up some of the best new smartphone and tablet PC apps doing the rounds. Here are this week's apps...

The Dark Knight Rises — iOS, €5.49
The Dark Knight Rises is a brawler. You play Batman, you drive the Bat-Pod and you participate in some of the key scenes from the film. There are also side quests and chances to explore a vast Gotham with hostage situations and jailbreaks to test you. There are gadgets aplenty too, including the Grapnel and Batarang.

The Official Programme London 2012 Olympic Games — iOS, €5.99 per day or €59.99 for all 16 issues
Catch up with exclusive interviews, unique insights and previews of upcoming events in a 68-page daily programme. Plus, download the special issue to discover the illustrious history of the Olympics and read exclusive introductory letters from the Queen, David Cameron and Boris Johnson.

Pub Hub — iOS, Free
The hugely successful Pub Hub app, launched at the end of June by Britvic Licensed Wholesale, has reached 10,000 downloads in its first month. The innovative app harnesses digital marketing power for those in the licensed trade, allowing them to engage with pub-goers anytime, anywhere. It was the top download in the lifestyle section of the App Store last month.

Slices — Andoid/iOS, Free
Twitter may be cracking down on third-party clients, but it would be a shame if that created problems for Slices. The slick new filter-focused app turns your timeline into category-based ‘slices’, while also helping you find people to follow in different areas. It is great for helping you easily explore Twitter, bookmark key accounts, and follow live events tweet by tweet.
