Boyzone's Shane: I still can't get over Stephen Gately's death

“Hes a massive loss to us all. Im quite strong in my faith, but I cant come to terms with his death or find the reason why.”

Boyzone star Shane Lynch has revealed he’s still struggling to come to terms with the tragic death of bandmate Stephen Gately.

Dubliner Shane (36) admitted it will be tough to celebrate Boyzone’s 20th anniversary next year in the absence of his pal.

The band were left grief-stricken when Stephen died suddenly aged just 33 on holiday in Spain in 2009. “Stephen was special, a soft, gentle character,” said Shane.

“He didn’t get on with the real world.

“His house was filled with Disney film characters. He loved magical stuff rather than the real world.”

Shane — who was especially close to Stephen as they were both based in London — added: “I took him under my wing because I knew he was vulnerable.

“I felt the need to look after him, and the others lived in Ireland.

“He’s a massive loss to us all. I’m quite strong in my faith, but I can’t come to terms with his death or find the reason why.”

Shane confessed it will be difficult for the band when they mark their 20th anniversary with a new album and tour.

“Without a doubt,” he said. “But we love being together as a band because that’s where we share our good memories of Stephen.

“It’s a positive thing. We only think about the good times we had together.”
