The Monkees singer died following a massive heart attack

R.I.P Davy Jones

Musicians and fans around the world have paid tribute to singer Davy Jones of The Monkees, who died yesterday of a massive heart attack.

Jones (66) was admitted to hospital near his home in Florida on Tuesday night complaining of chest pains. He had only recently returned home after touring with two other members of The Monkees, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork.

His last performance was on February 19 in Oklahoma, playing classic hits like Daydream Believer and It’s Nice to Be with You. Manchester-born Jones is survived by his wife, glamorous TV presenter Jessica Pacheco (34), and four daughters, Talia, Sarah, Jessica and Annabel, from previous marriages.

Jones, real name David Thomas Jones, started his career as an actor but went on to join The Monkees in 1965. The group was initially cast by producers who wanted a scripted series about a rock’n’roll band. It was one of the first shows to use the “structured reality” format that’s now so well known in shows like The Hills and Jersey Shore.

The band easily went on to outsell The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in 1967. Initial tributes last night came from DJs Danny Baker and Iain Lee and author Tony Parsons, while Hollywood superstar Will Smith simply tweeted: “R.I.P Davy Jones.”
