Angry road-safety chief Gay Byrne has blasted “lunatics” for making up wild stories about him.
The ex Late Late Show host was left fuming yesterday over rumours his car had failed an NCT test because of bald front tyres.
The Star contacted Gaybo after a motorist called the newspaper to say he had witnessed the TV legend’s car fail the test.
However, furious Gay — who is chairman of the Road Safety Authority
(RSA) — said the vehicle in question was actually his wife’s car, and it had actually passed the test with flying colours.
The 77-year-old broadcaster said: “I brought my wife’s car for an NCT test yesterday as it is now over 10 years old and it passed it with no problems.
“It is absolutely untrue for anyone to say that it didn’t pass. There was nothing wrong with any of its tyres.
“But the last four calls I have taken have been because of people making up stories about me. These people are lunatics.”
However, the veteran broadcaster added that it was very important that his wife’s car had been checked.
He said: “Like everybody else who has a car over 10 years old, it has to go for an NCT every year and that is important.”
Gay was appointed chairman of the RSA in 2006.
