Our picks of the biggest and best coming to San Diego this July
Comic-Con 2012 is almost here, let us give you a glimpse of what to expect over the next few days as the Con hits San Diego (and the internet) hard.

Comic-Con is an annual event held in San Diego, California which has been running since 1970. Originally born as purely a Comic Book convention, the four day event has expanded over the years to include TV and more recently has included an increasing focus on feature films. It is one of the largest such conventions in the world, attracting upwards of 130,000 attendees in 2010.

While Click sadly won’t be travelling the hallowed ground of Hall H in the San Diego Convention Centre this year, we will be bringing you as much news as we can from the event. But before all that, we’ve delved deep into the frankly intimidating program to seek out some choice movie related press conferences and events over the coming four days. Take a look at our 10 highlights for Comic-Con 2012.

Thursday July 12th

Wreck-It Ralph
Disney (without the obvious help of Pixar) takes a punt at an unusual CG animated world with nary a princess in sight. Ralph looks like a strong new direction for the House of Mouse, with a clever premise and some stunning animation to boot.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
It’s too big to ignore, Twilight will be going out with a bang at this year’s event, as the cast all reminisce about what an ‘incredible journey’ it has all been while secretly hoping it will soon all be over. They’ve saved some epic stuff for last, and you can expect the internet to explode with fandom once the conference is done.

The Expendables 2
The first film may have been an amazing cast list in search of a better film but with Simon West on board as director, at least there’s a chance of better action this time. The roster is even more impressive for the sequel and many of them will be in Hall H for a Q&A including Stallone, Crews, Lundgren, Van Damme and even Schwarzenegger!

Friday July 13th

Elysium
District 8 director Neil Blomkamp is back with a futuristic sci-fi that again delves into social issues, while presenting an incredibly detailed world. He’s roped in Matt Damon and Jodie Foster for a story about a socially stratified world and all three will be in attendance at the Con.

Looper
Rian Johnson’s sci-fi brain twister is far from the biggest film on the list but the premise looks tantalising and the first few trailers rock. Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt will be in the room, answering questions and showing plenty of footage from the already completed film, which is set to release in September.

Saturday July 14th

Man of Steel
New Superman Henry Cavill will finally get the chance to show off some footage of his take on DCs other superhero. Will ZackSnyder be able to wipe away the stain of SuckerPunch? We’ll have to wait and see.

Pacific Rim
Director Guillermo del Toro made some big promises about his monsters vrs robots movie last year and this time he’s going to have to deliver with some footage. The leaked stills we’ve seen look sublime and the Mexican filmmaker knows how to get the best out of CG on screen.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Peter Jackson almost avoided stepping back into Middle Earth but the hard working Kiwi has already completed principal photography on his next Tolkein-inspired two hander. He’ll be on hand to introduce new footage, the first since the mixed reaction to the 48 fps projection at CinemaCon. We’re hoping for a little less singing and a glimpse of the denizens of Mirkwood…

Iron Man 3
The Avengers was awesome, everyone knows that, but the last Iron Man entry was a bit of a dud. Robert Downey jr and new writer/director Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) will be looking to change that. Both are likely to be in town to show off some work in progress footage, and we can hope for a few less quips this time…

Django Unchained
We caught some early footage of Quentin Tarantino’s latest a few months back and it’s going to blow Comic-Con viewers away with its mix of action, violence, drama and daring comedy. QT will be there, jabbering away in his normal amiable fashion, along with the cast which includes Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio.

That’s just a sample of what will be happening in San Diego over the coming days but we couldn’t resist adding just one more. July 13th will showcase an unprecedented reunion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of the greatest (cancelled) TV shows ever when the Firefly cast reunite on stage! Joss Whedon will be joined by Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Michael Fairman, Sean Maher and Alan Tudyk as well as writer Tim Minear a decade after their near perfect sci-fi show was unceremoniously dumped. They’ll sit for a Q&A session and show off never before behind the scenes footage from the filming of the landmark show and it will appear in a commemorative documentary being shot for the 10th anniversary called Browncoats Unite and produced by the Science Channel. We cannot wait!

So stay tuned for more from San Diego Comic-Con and let us know what you’re most looking forward to.
