The parents of a Chinese stuntman who was killed on the set of The Expendables 2
when a stunt went awry are filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Millenium Entertainment, Nu Image and the film's stunt coordinator, Chad Stahelski
. Kun Liu was killed during an explosion scene while another stuntman was injured in October 2011. The scene was being shot under the supervision of a second unit stunt team and coordinated by Chad Stahelski.
Zong Yu Liu and Tan Mei Bai believe that those involved in the film "recklessly organized, planned, set up, produced, directed, trained, coordinated and otherwise prepared for and implemented the stunt which involved the use of explosives and other similar ultra-hazardous activities in the rubber boat so as to cause an explosion, thereby injuring [Liu] and causing his death." The suit does not mention how much the family is seeking in damages.
On the day of the accident, director Simon West and Stallone were shooting with the main unit two and a half hours away. Chad Stahelski served as the stunt coordinator and second unit director on The Expendables 2, and was shooting the scene in which Liu was killed. West and the stars of the film have not been listed as defendants in this case.
We will keep you posted as we hear more about this case. The Expendables 2 will be released on August 17th and it could be a little tougher to watch the scene in question armed with the knowledge of what has occurred.
