Irish crooner Janet Devlin
made it to the final five on X Factor
last night - despite being given the thumbs down by former winner Alexandra Burke.
The flame-haired 17-year-old admitted that she was terrified returning to X Factor this weekend after enduring a barrage of criticism from nasty head judge Gary Barlow.
However, Janet won the audience’s vote with her performance of Kiss Me as she watched rival Craig Colton being booted off the show. Craig (23) ended up in the bottom two with Amelia Lily (17) but lost out after a dramatic sing-off.
However, former X Factor 2008 winner Alexandra Burke
insisted that Janet is not doing enough to be the ultimate winner on the show. She claims that Janet needs to move out of her comfort zone if she wants to keep the public interested.
“If you’re performing within a comfort zone, it’s a good thing for you but maybe not for the audience,” she said. “You’ve got to keep changing it up every week and I think that’s what Janet needs to do. She has to get it a little bit spicier.”
Top UK DJ Johnny Vaughan
also revealed he expected Janet to be “a goner” after her performance this weekend. “It was comfortable, it was fine but that’s, I think, as good as she gets,” he said. “It didn’t move me. It didn’t have the goose-bump factor.”
However, the X Factor judges including Gary disagreed and all gave her the thumbs up this week. “Every week you deliver, no tricks,” said Louis Walsh. “With you it’s all about the voice, you’ve got natural Celtic charm. We’re looking for a recording star and I believe we’ve found it with you.” Gary added: “It’s all about song choice, when you get the song right, you really soar. You were really connected tonight and so were we.”
Janet, who was blasted for being too predictable with her recent performances, said she was shocked by Gary’s earlier jibes that she is “boring”. “I don’t want to bore people during my performances, I want them to enjoy them,” she said. “I’m definitely not your stereotypical pop artist. I’ve nothing against pop music - it’s just difficult to find songs that I like in the pop industry. I’ve strong ideas about what I want in music. I’m not boring, I’m just weird!”
