Rights to Need for Speed movie snapped up
Yes, this is really happening.
DreamWorks Studios has acquired the rights to create a film from EA’s Need for Speed franchise. George and John Gatins developed the original story with George writing the feature’s screenplay. The screenplay is not based on one individual game; instead, it encapsulates the series as a whole. Scott Waugh is attached to direct, while EA, John Gatins and Mark Sourian will produce.

DreamWorks Chairman, Steven Spielberg, said that he was looking forward to this particular venture. Spielberg said, “I'm excited about getting back into the creative trenches with John and George Gatins and my partners at EA to bring to life an exhilarating script based on an epic video game that seems to have been made for the movies.” Executive Vice President at EA Games Label, Patrick Soderlund, said that DreamWorks will be a great home for the franchise. He added, “It’s fantastic to be working with a team that shares not only our love of cars, but also our passion for creating blockbuster action experiences.”

DreamWorks Studios is fast-tracking this particular project. It aims to start producing early next year for a 2014 release date. Now we just have to wait for Need for Speed The Movie: The Game.
