The internet has been set ablaze by rumours that The Avengers
is gearing up for a cinema release of a Director’s Cut later this year. The Director’s Cut is said to feature more of the story of Captain America
including a reunion with Peggy Carter, the love he left behind when he sacrificed himself at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger
. Director Joss Whedon
has already said that between 30 to 45 minutes of footage was left on the cutting room floor. Currently they are only rumours with Marvel Studios stating that it does not comment on rumours one way or the other.
The Avengers has smashed box office records, but currently lies in third spot on both the domestic and International ticket sale charts. However, Avatar
were both treated to re-releases, helping them to these positions in the charts. If Marvel and Disney are eyeing up this leaderboard, a later release would be the best way to go about it. The additional benefit for Disney is that a re-release could help recover some of the investment that was poured into the underperforming John Carter
. Whether people are clamouring for a total of three hours of footage or a more elaborate Captain America story is unclear though.
The other consideration is how a re-release could affect a DVD and Blu-ray release later this year. The timing of these moves could be crucial. Of course, at this point in time it is worth remembering that these are just rumours.
