The first new iPad feature is a brand new screen, and it's 2048 x 1536, or otherwise known as the Retina Display. For those that are counting, that's 3.1 million pixels. "The most ever in a mobile device." says new CEO Tim Cook.
All Apple preloaded apps have been updated, but as you remember when the iPhone 4 went to the retina display, developers didn't have to do anything and their apps looked better. So, existing apps will be scaled up and text will automatically be rendered in higher-res.
To drive this is the new A5X processor chip with onboard quad-core graphics and 4 times the speed of other tablets or "twice as fast" as the A5 chip in the iPad 2.
The second new feature is the upgraded camera. It's now got a 5-megapixel backside illuminated sensor on the back, 5-element lens, IR filter, and ISP built into the A5X chip or the same setup as the iPhone 4S -- which is to say it should be pretty great. With this comes 1080p video recording which is a good camera on such a large device.
"The iPad like all great iOS devices has a great keyboard and now you'll see there's a new key on the bottom: a microphone." Launches Cook into the next feature. Siri is on board and thanks to the iOS 5.1 upgrades now speakses with a Japanese and Australian accent. The button above is the new voice recognition, again we saw this on the iPhone 4S.
With all this extra grunt and graphics Apple confirm the same battery life, i.e. 10 hours. Also mentioned was the that the size is around the same as the iPad 2. Okay, it's 9.4mm thin, weighing 1.4lbs, so, it's slightly heavier than the second generation device.
Other notable mentions is that iPad 2 has 3.1Mbps on EV-DO, 7.2 on HSPA, where as the new iPad now has 21Mbps HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps, with LTE at 73Mbps or 4G if your into your numbering.
Some good news is the new iPad will have the same prices as the current generation iPad, and will be available on March 16th in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan. With all remainingcountries launching on March 23rd for Apple's largest rollout day ever.
