The 5S and 5C: Specs to Expect
Expectations of Apple's upcoming iPhone announcements.

While rumours and leaks have been making the rounds over the past few months, Apple is finally set to lay its cards on the table and show exactly what it’s been working on, and how it plans to combat the new wave of competitors at the high-end and compete in the more budget-friendly market. However, we could know exactly what the company has in store already.

iPhone 5S

While the S in the iPhone 4S stood for Siri, it’s likely that it stands for Speed this time around. The iPhone 5S is the hotly anticipated successor to the iPhone 5, which was released this time last year. However, the competition has stepped up a notch since then with Samsung, Nokia and Sony all innovating, improving and impressing, so Apple will need to have a few tricks up its sleeves.

One of said tricks looks set to be the fingerprint scanner, known as Touch ID. This should add a layer of security as to unlock a protected iPhone 5S the user will have to click and hold their finger or thumb on the sensor for a few seconds. For those uncomfortable with storing their digits on their device, in case some mobster decides to take a finger, there will also be an option to disable this and use the more traditional unlock system.

Internally, the iPhone 5S looks likely to use the next-generation of Apple chips, the A7. This will bolster the speed of the device, though no one has gotten a dial on what it is clocked at. Apple has succeeded in keeping the internals of the device more of a secret. Despite all the leaks, the amount of RAM contained within the 5S is unknown, while the amount of storage space is speculation with some suggesting it could be up to 128GB, double what was supported by the iPhone 5.

Apple is sticking to what it knows in other areas. Unsurprisingly it looks like the iPhone 5S will feature a 4-inch display with a resolution of 1136 x 640 and 326 ppi. A recently leaked spec sheet also indicates that the 5S will be the exact same size as its predecessor (123.8x58.6x7.6mm).

Curiously it seems that Apple is unwilling to enhance its camera. Leaks suggest that the iPhone 5S will once again use an 8 megapixel camera with a f/2.0 lens, but that it will be capable of recording 1080p video at 120fps.

One gripe that we constantly have when it comes to smartphones is battery life, but this looks to be an area that Apple will be tackling. Current claims suggest that the battery will hold about 250 hours on standby on a single charge, but this will need testing rather than confirmation from Apple to determine if it’s true.

Expected spec sheet:

Display: 4-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1136 x 640

Processor: Apple A7 processor

RAM: 2GB

Storage: 32, 64 or 128GB

Camera: 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with ability to capture 1080p video at 120 frames per second; 2 megapixel front-facing camera

OS: iOS7

iPhone 5C

While Apple broadened the colour palette of devices such as the iPod touch, and other iPod variants, it avoided doing the same for the iPhone line. The iPhone 5C will see the smartphone embrace a more varied colour selection with a range of coloured backs to choose from. Even Apple’s invitation for the event echoes this rumour with the suggestion that it has an announcement that “should brighten everyone's day" accompanied by a colourful logo. Pictures have emerged showcasing the device in green, yellow, blue, red and white.

Some sources have suggested that the iPhone 5C’s screen size could clock in anywhere from 3.5- to 4.5-inches, but it’s more likely that the iPhone 5C will retain the same 4.5-inch display that graces the iPhone 5 and its high-end successor. The app store has thrived because it caters for standardised handsets and the screen is a fundamental part of this. As a result, it is highly unlikely that Apple will upset the ecosystem.

Apple has managed to keep the specs of the 5C close its chest, but it is rumoured that Apple will phase out the iPhone 4S and in favour of the 5C. So expect to see the same dual-core Apple processor that we’re accustomed to along with 1GB RAM, and the option of 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB internal storage. While many manufactures are battling for the camera crown at the high-end of the market, the mid-range market remains content with an 8 megapixel camera. Apple has made use of its 8 megapixel sensor for some time, so don’t expect an upgrade here.

iOS7 is also going to be announced at the upcoming conference, and it should make an appearance on the iPhone 5C. Again, this is a case of ensuring that devices remain standardised, so Apple will want to ensure that its handset remains relevant for some time.

Expected spec sheet:

Display: 4-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1136 x 640

Processor: Dual-core Apple A6 processor

RAM: 1GB

Storage: 16, 32 or 64GB

Camera: 8 megapixel rear-facing camera; 2 megapixel front-facing camera

OS: iOS7

There’s no doubting that excitement is reaching fever pitch, so stay tuned for coverage of Apple’s official announcements.
